French sensation Christine and the Queens made her comeback with catchy single “Girlfriend” but has upped the stakes even more with her latest release “Doesn’t Matter.”
Announcing her sophomore effort, Chris, the new alter ego of the singer is now in full swing and on display in the music video for the new track.
Héloïse Letissier (Christine’s real name) told Zane Lowe about her views of being non-binary and the power dynamics between men and women with her persona of Chris. She said that “it had to be Chris at some point because I was bolder and stronger and had more muscle. At the same time, it’s me announcing to myself that I’m about to become that… It’s very much you allowing yourself to be even more.”
“Doesn’t Matter” lives in Letissier’s lower register and is backed by an 80s inspired bassline. She simply asks “It doesn’t matter, does it?” and touches upon subjects like suicide, religion, and body issues. While all of these are important thoughts to continue to ponder, this is still a Christine and the Queens track and it’s important to dance while going through one’s existential crisis because how else are we going to survive this thing called life?
