“I think I’m underrated,” Charli XCX once tweeted out. With anyone else, a statement like that would come off as arrogant — an entitled brat who is upset she hasn’t hit mainstream. For Charli XCX, it’s just a straight fact.
It’s almost criminal that Charli XCX isn’t the biggest pop star in the world. A capable singer with charisma oozing out of every pore, she also the ability to write the catchiest pop songs in the biz.
At the very end of 2017, she unleashed her second mixtape, Pop 2, which easily claimed the title of one of the best pop offerings of the year. At the El Rey in Los Angeles on Thursday night (March 15), the British singer-songwriter-producer celebrated that mixtape with a little help from her friends.
From Tove Lo to Carly Rae Jepsen, most of the artists featured on Pop 2 came out in support of Charli and to help turn the El Rey into the hottest party in Los Angeles.
There is no one more comfortable on stage than Charli XCX. She is a ball of energy; a hype man for the audience, her DJ, and of course: herself. “Give it up for me,” she exclaimed after her first two songs and the audience was more than excited to oblige. There’s something incredibly exciting about Charli XCX and it radiates through her live performance. There’s nothing like her in pop music right now, which is all the more reason why she should be reigning queen.
The most beautiful thing about this show in particular was the energy in the room. There was never a still moment from Charli or the audience. It was a mutual exchange of energy: Charli provided the bangers and the audience responded with cheers and the ultimate dance party. There is no shame at a Charli XCX show; everyone is free to be who they are, express themselves in any way they choose, and it is not only accepted but celebrated. It’s a cathartic experience but that’s what a live show is suppose to be and Charli XCX delivers every single time.
